Feeding and Managing the Cowherd in Confinement or Semi-Confinement Systems (Jason Warner)
Feeding and managing the cowherds in confinement or semi-confinement is becoming increasingly more popular as an alternative production system for operations. Important aspects to consider include nutrition, reproduction, health, general management, and economics.
Grazing Crop Residues (Ki Fanning)
Allowing cattle to graze crop residues benefits the soil, animals, and producer. Cattle are able to use nutrients from the field and return them in a form more easily utilized by the crops. It also provides means of dispersing disease load and potentially increasing the producer’s financial profits. Water access, soil compaction, and methods of confinement should be considered.
